ROSE HILL HISTORY IN JEOPARDY!

Breaking News

UPDATE ON SILOS

We have been presented with a PROPOSED layout for the 4-plus acres on May Boulevard that will Save Our Silos! There is a long way to go, but there is positive movement afoot. Rev. Claude Wheeler, owner of the property, proposes to build six (6) houses on the south side of the property and sell the existing building for a combination church and school operation. The existing buildings, including the silos, would remain. The swimming pool would be removed. At this point, we have been presented with NO plans to modify the existing buildings that originally housed a community center and later private schools and a day care center. The six houses can be built by right because the land is zoned R-3, the same density as the rest of Rose Hill. Two houses will front on May Boulevard and the others will be accessed via a cul de sac making an intersection at current Silo Road, The church will require a Special Permit and the school a Special Exception to operate on residentially zoned land. Public Hearings will be required before the Board of Zoning Appeals for the church and the Planning Commission and the Board of Supervisors for the school. The church involved is the Amanuel Ethopian Evangelical Church, currently meeting at St. George Episcopal Church near the Clarendon Metro stop in Arlington. The school will be called Rose Hill Academy and will be operated by the same folks that run Messiah Luthern Academy in the Fort Hunt area. No application has been filed with the County as yet. When and if it is, all the parties will be invited to an RHCA meeting to present their proposal and answer questions. They are aware that traffic, size, hours of operation and the preservation of the silos are the community's major concerns.  We will copies of the proposed layout for distribution at the January 24 RHCA meeting. If the proposal is finally approved, it will take the place of a preliminary subdivision plat that would demolish the silos.

Carl Sell's New Book

After writing two books for the Franconia Museum, Carl Sell has authored a novel about his great grandfather, a Confederate private who survived the Civil War. He was wounded as part of Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg, also wounded at a later battle, hospitalized twice and captured nine days before the war ended. The book also includes info about his granddaughter's relatives, one of whom who was a private in the Union army who was wounded at Fairfax Station. And, there is a chapter about the relative of one of Carl's cousins who was a Medal of Honor recipient for his gallantry at Cold Harbor before the age of 18. The book is based on fact. It traces Private James Farthing through the war and reports on his tragic death in a railroad accident 23 years later. He fathered one daughter, who in turn had 13 children. One of them was Carl's mother. If you would like a copy, the price is $26.25, including tax. If you live in Rose Hill or nearby, give Carl a call at 703-971-4716 or e-mail him at sellcarl@aol.com and he will deliver a signed copy in exchange for a check or cash. If you wish to order online by credit card, go to franconiamuseum.org and click on items for sale. There is a $5 shipping and handling fee for books purchased online.
