Weekly Incident Summary Report
November 04-10, 2004

ATTEMPTED MALICIOUS WOUNDING: As two men were fleeing from security officers at Springfield Mall, one fired a gun at the officers and one drew a knife. The officers were not injured. Around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, November 11, Mall security officers confronted two men who were in front of a store in the mall yelling at two other men. The security officers told the men that they were creating a disturbance, and the two men ran from the security officers. As the officers pursued the men outside the Mall into the parking area, one suspect drew a handgun from his waistband, and the second suspect drew a long knife. One suspect fired two shots at the security officers, but did not hit them. The two suspects continued to run west behind Franconia Road and the officers lost sight of them. Police searched the area but were not able to locate the suspects.

One suspect is described as white, 5 feet 9 inches tall and 140 pounds. He had brown hair and was wearing gray shorts, a white shirt and New Balance shoes. The second suspect is described as white, 5 feet 9 inches tall and 140 pounds with brown hair. He was wearing blue jeans. No information on ages is available at this time.

CARJACKING: On Thursday, November 4, around 4:30 a.m., 58-year-old Alexandria area man was sitting in his vehicle in the 6000 block of Clames Drive when he was ordered out of his car by a man with a gun. The victim was ordered into the back seat where he was joined by a second man with a handgun. The suspects drove the victim to a bus stop near Franconia Road and Beulah Street and picked up two more suspects, one was a female. The victim was driven to a nearby church parking lot, ordered out of the car and robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash and various personal items. After being punched in the face by one of the suspects, the victim was able to escape and report the incident to police. The suspects left with the victim’s 2003 black Lincoln Town Car in an unknown direction. There were no reported injuries.

One of the suspects was described as black, in his early 20s, about 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighed about 150 pounds. He was last seen wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt. A second suspect was also described as black, in his 20s, about 6 feet tall and weighed about 170 pounds. He was last seen wearing a gray hooded sweat shirt. There is no description on the other two suspects at this time.

SCHOOL BURGLARIES: In the early morning hours of Saturday, November 6, an alarm was activated at Garfield Elementary School in Springfield. The school security officer and Fairfax County police officers discovered the school, located at 7101 Old Keene Mill Road, had been broken into through the window in an exterior door in the cafeteria. Extensive damage was found in the cafeteria kitchen office; book shelves were overturned and a computer was smashed.

About 3 a.m., shortly after arriving on scene, officers responded to a second school alarm at Lee High School at 6540 Franconia Road in the Springfield area. The school kitchen was ransacked, food had been eaten, and windows had been broken. A school security officer stopped three youths that fled from the building, but one of the youths began to assault the school security officer and the three youths got away. Personal belongings left behind by one youth, however, lead to his identity. The security officer was uninjured.

The investigation is ongoing. Detectives believe the break-ins at the two schools are related.

ROBBERY: A man was robbed after parking his car at his apartment complex early Tuesday morning. On November 9 around 1:30 a.m. a 20-year-old man was parking in the 6700 block of Metropolitan Center Drive when another car pulled into a parking space behind his. As he began walking toward the apartment complex, three men got out of the second car, and one of them displayed a handgun and demanded money. The robbers stole the victim’s wallet and a case of compact discs. A car drove by as the robbery was taking place, and one robber hit the victim in the head with the gun, knocking him to the ground. The robbers fled in a dark, possibly blue or black, two-door Chevy without a front license plate.

The first suspect is described as black in his 20s, about 6 feet 3 inches tall and 190 pounds. He wore a black jacket. The second suspect is described as middle-eastern, with a goatee, 6 feet 5 inches tall; wearing a dark, hooded sweatshirt (unknown height and weight). Suspect three was also middle-eastern with a dark, hooded sweatshirt.
