FATAL CRASH

Richmond Highway/Armistead Street:  Just after 1 a.m. on Saturday, September 23, the driver of a 1999 Buick heading north on Richmond Highway attempted to make a U-turn into the southbound lanes. A 2004 Toyota traveling northbound on Richmond Highway hit the driver’s side of the turning car. Earl Brockenbough, 72, of Brockton, Massachusetts, was critically injured in the collision and was dead on arrival at INOVA Mount Vernon Hospital. A passenger in his car was not seriously injured. Detectives say speed appears to have been a factor in this crash. An investigation is underway to determine which of the three people in the striking vehicle was driving when the crash occurred. No charges have been filed pending completion of the investigation.
