Weekly Incident Summary Report
Aug 21-27, 2003

IMPERSONATION OF A POLICE OFFICER: A man identifying himself as a police officer stole money from two victims within a few miles of each other on Saturday, August 23. Around 3 pm, a 24-year-old Falls Church area man was waiting for a bus in Arlington County. A man driving a tan Toyota approached the victim and identified himself as a police officer working for a store. He asked the victim to come with him as he was investigating a case. The suspect drove the victim to the 6300 block of Leesburg Pike, in the Seven Corners area, where he asked the man for his wallet. The victim handed over his wallet and waited while the phony officer appeared to write down information from the victim’s identification card. After being told he was free to go, the victim discovered he was missing an undisclosed amount of money from his wallet.

About an hour later, a man fitting the same description approached a 27-year-old Annandale area woman near Roundtree Park on Annandale Road, in the Annandale area. He identified himself as a police officer and asked her to come with him as he investigated a case. He told her she was under arrest and he needed to look in her purse or else she would be deported. After he went into her purse, the suspect drove the victim to a nearby location and let her go. Later the woman discovered she was missing an undisclosed amount of money.

In both cases, the man was described as Hispanic, in his mid to late twenties, wearing a red shirt. The car was a gold or tan sedan, possibly a Toyota Camry. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Fairfax County Police at (703) 691-2131 or Fairfax County Crime Solvers at (703) 691-8888.

NOTE: THESE INCIDENTS DID NOT OCCUR IN FRANCONIA DISTRICT, HOWEVER THE PUBLIC IS ASKED TO BE AWARE OF SUCH INSTANCES AND REPORT THEM IMMEDIATELY TO THE POLICE.

SUSPICIOUS DEATH: A suspicious death in the Lorton area is under investigation. On Saturday, August 23, 2003 at about 8:30 a.m, police were called to the 9500 block of Inverary Court for the report of a dead person. Officers arrived and found 20-year-old Manfredy Molina inside his home deceased from a gunshot wound to the upper body. The circumstances surrounding his death are still under investigation.

BOATING ACCIDENT / FATALITY: A 45-year-old Alexandria area man is dead after a fatal boating accident on Saturday, August 23, 2003. James Smith of 100 Century Drive was riding on the bow of a boat in Belmont Bay about 6:30 p.m. when he fell into the water. The driver of the boat, 53-year-old Donald James, also of the Alexandria area, spotted Smith and dove in after him. Before James could reach Smith, Smith sunk under water. Police and Fire and Rescue Department personnel were called, but could not locate Smith. The following morning, the Fairfax County Police Dive Team, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department personnel, and Prince William County Fire and Rescue Department personnel returned to the area to continue the search. Around 12:30 p.m. Sunday, August 24, Smith’s body was located near the shore of Rock Island. The circumstances surrounding the accident are still under investigation.
