CAC:

Mark your calendars! The next CAC meeting will be a PICNIC, Wednesday evening, July 21, 2004, at 6:00 pm until ?? at the US Coast Guard Communications Station on Telegraph Road, north of the Hayfield Shopping Center. We expect to have demonstrations by the Canine Team (drug detection dogs and, if not on call, the FCPD helicopter). Attendees are asked to bring a side dish, salad or dessert. The Franconia Station FCPD will provide the burgers, hot dogs, buns and drinks (and do the cooking). All vehicles entering the Coast Guard facility will need to have a Visitor Card. These can be obtained from the Crime Prevention Office at Franconia District Station (703-922-8263. We hope to see you there.

MODIP

The Fairfax County Police Department offers residents 55 years of age and older enrollment in the Mature Operator’s Driver Improvement Program (MODIP). This eight-hour course, which provides safe driving information, is sanctioned by the American Automobile Association (AAA) and is presented by certified Fairfax County Auxiliary Police Officers. Upon completion of this course, drivers are eligible for the Virginia State-mandated insurance premium reduction (check with individual insurance carriers for the amount). The classes are held the second Saturday of each month at the Franconia District Station. The next MODIP class is being held at the Franconia District Station located at 6121 Franconia Road, on Saturday, July 10, 2004, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. A subsequent seminar is scheduled for August 14, 2004, and will be at the same time and location. Registration is required and can be done by contacting the MODIP reservations line at (703) 924-6588. The fee for this course is $10.00 per person for books and materials.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

This year, "National Night Out," the annual celebration of taking back the night from the criminal element in our society, will be on August 3. Neighborhood Watch groups, Citizens and Homeowners associations, and other community groups organize street parties on this occasion. FELONY HIT AND RUN:

Byron Avenue and Old Keene Mill Road: Oscar Rene Bonilla surrendered to police around 8:00 p.m. Thursday, June 10, at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. He was held without bond. A warrant had been issued for Bonilla, operator of the Ford F-150 pick up truck involved in the fatal crash at the intersection of Byron Avenue and Old Keene Mill Road. Oscar Rene Bonilla, 25, of 8103 Blairton Road in the Springfield area, was charged with felony hit and run. A 20-year-old Woodbridge area woman was killed as a result of the crash in the Springfield area early Thursday morning, June 10. At 12:36 a.m., Kathryn Anne Southard, of 2252 Jennings Street, was attempting to make a left turn from Byron Avenue onto Old Keene Mill Road. Bonilla was driving westbound on Old Keene Mill Road and hit her car broadside. Ms. Southard’s vehicle, a 1992 Subaru Legacy, was shoved across the median and into the eastbound traffic lanes; she was dead at the scene. The pickup continued across the median to the eastbound portion of Old Keene Mill Road and drove into a tree. The driver left the truck at the scene and fled on foot.

ASSAULT WITH WEAPON

Edsall Road, 6400 Block: Fairfax County Police detectives arrested a 17-year-old Alexandria area teenager in relation to the May 10 machete attack on Edsall Road. He was arrested on Tuesday, June 15, and was charged with aggravated malicious wounding and participation in gang activity.
