Mature Operator's Driver Improvement Program (MODIP)
The Franconia District Station of the Fairfax County Police Department will be offering Virginia residents 55 and older enrollment in the Mature Operator's Driver Improvement Program (MODIP). This eight-hour class covers safe driving information for mature drivers. The course is sanctioned by the American Automobile Association (AAA) and is presented by certified Fairfax County Auxiliary Police Officers. Upon completion of this course, drivers are eligible for the Virginia State mandated insurance premium reduction (check with individual insurance carriers for the amount). The classes are held the second Saturday of each month.
The next MODIP class is being held at the Franconia District Station located at 6121 Franconia Road, on Saturday, June 14, 2003, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Subsequent seminars are scheduled for July 12 and August 9, 2003. Registration is required and can be done by contacting the MODIP reservations line at (703) 924-6588. The fee for this course is $10 per person for books and materials.
The next meeting of the Franconia District Citizens Advisory Committee will be held at the Franconia District Station on Wednesday, June 18, 2003 at 7:30pm. The Social period begins at 7:00pm. We look forward to seeing you there.
Commerce Street, 7000 Block: On May 30 at 12:00 p.m., a Springfield area woman, 56, was walking out of La Latina market when a man approached her and stuck a gun in her back. He forced her into his car, which was occupied by a woman in the back seat, and drove away. The man drove a short distance then grabbed the victims purse and rummaged through it, taking some cash and jewelry. The suspect demanded more money and ordered the victim to take him to her home to get more cash. The victim complied and took the suspects to her home and gathered more money while the suspects waited outside. The victim went back outside with more cash and the suspects demanded she get into the car again. The male suspect took the cash and started driving again. The victim made good her escape by jumping out of the moving car and running away. The suspects were described as Hispanic. The man was in his 50s, six feet tall and weighed 250 pounds. He was wearing a white short-sleeved shirt and tan pants. The woman was in her 20s, five feet three inches tall and weighed 100 pounds. The vehicle was described as a newer-model red Toyota or Honda four-door sedan.
