CAC:

The next CAC meeting will be held on Wednesday evening, May 18, 2005, at the Franconia Government Center in the public meeting room. Mark your calendars and be sure to attend. The meeting begins at 7:30pm, pre-meeting social period begins at 7:00pm.

MODIP:

The Fairfax County Police Department offers residents 55 years of age and older enrollment in the Mature Operator’s Driver Improvement Program (MODIP). This eight hour course, which provides safe driving information, is sanctioned by the American Automobile Association (AAA) and is presented by certified Fairfax County Auxiliary Police Officers. Upon completion of this course, drivers are eligible for the Virginia State-mandated insurance premium reduction (check with individual insurance carriers for the amount). The classes are held the second Saturday of each month at the Franconia District Station. The next seminars are scheduled at the Franconia District Station, located at 6121 Franconia Road, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.on June 11, 2005 and July 09, 2005. Registration is required and can be done by contacting the MODIP reservations line at (703) 924-6588. The fee for this course is $10.00 per person for books and materials.

WEAPON SIEZED FROM TEENAGER ON SCHOOL PROPERTY:

A machete has been seized and a Springfield-area youth has been charged with taking the weapon onto school property. On Friday, May 6, at approximately 7:00 a.m., the 17-year-old went to Robert E. Lee High School, located at 6540 Franconia Road. The teenager is not a student at Lee. While on the campus he and several other juveniles got into a confrontation. The suspect took out a machete, waved it into the air and pounded it against the ground. A school teacher broke up the dispute and the suspect ran away. He was arrested a short time later and the machete was recovered. Detectives have obtained petitions for trespassing and possession of a weapon on school property. None of the juveniles were injured.

ASSISTANCE NEEDED IN LOCATING MAN IN DANGER:

Fairfax County police are requesting the public’s assistance in locating a 61-year-old man. Richard Lyon was last seen on Thursday, April 21 at around 11 a.m., when he was walking northbound on Richmond Highway between Telegraph Road and Pohick Road in the Fort Belvoir area. He has not contacted his family since then and they are concerned for his safety. He has been known to have seizures and has not taken any medication for several weeks. The police and his family believe that he may be in danger because of his medical and mental status.

Mr. Lyon is white, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, around 150 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. He may be driving a 2001 silver four door Toyota Camry with Virginia license plates JME-4385.

Anyone with information on Mr. Lyons’ whereabouts or the location of the vehicle is asked to call police at 703-691-2131. Callers may remain anonymous.

ROBBERY:

Amherst Avenue, 5900 Block: On Sunday, May 9 around 3 a.m., while walking in the Springfield area a man was approached by three men. The 27-year-old Springfield-area man was tackled, assaulted and then his cellular phone, wallet and CVS shopping bag were taken from him. The suspects fled the area in the direction of Highland Street. The victim was uninjured. The first suspect was described as a Hispanic male, approximately 5 feet 11 inches tall, around 195 pounds, wearing blue jeans and a black shirt. The second suspect was described as a Hispanic male, approximately 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing around 190 pounds, wearing blue jeans. The third suspect was described as Hispanic male, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing approximately 150 pounds, wearing blue jeans.

Loisdale Road, 8105 Block: A Springfield business was robbed at gunpoint. On Thursday, May 5, at approximately 1:00 a.m., a man entered Parkway Express at 8105 Loisdale Road and brandished a handgun. He demanded money from a store employee, a 21-year-old Alexandria woman, who opened her register. The suspect then removed money from the register and fled in an unknown direction. The employee was not injured. The suspect is described as black, 30 to 35-years-old, five feet five inches tall and weighing approximately 155 pounds. He was wearing dark colored work pants, a dark vest and a white tee-shirt. Police detectives have been able to obtain pictures of the suspect from store videotape. He was seen fleeing in a green four-door vehicle with Virginia license plates.

SIMPLE ASSAULT:

Frontier Drive, 6500 Block: On Friday, May 7 around 10 p.m., a 16-year-old Alexandria-area teenager was walking past three juveniles who said something to him. That prompted the boy to ask them to leave him alone. One of the three juveniles assaulted him and the victim pulled out a knife. The other two juveniles became involved in the fight and eventually took the knife away from the victim. The victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Springfield Hospital. No charges have been filed in this case.
