Mark your calendars! The next CAC meeting will be held next Wednesday evening, April 21, 2004, in the Community Meeting room at the Franconia Governmental Center. Social period begins at 7pm; meeting begins at 7:30 pm. We hope to see you there.

OPERATOR’S DRIVER IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM (MODIP)

The Fairfax County Police Department offers residents 55 years of age and older enrollment in the Mature Operator’s Driver Improvement Program (MODIP). This eight-hour course, which provides safe driving information, is sanctioned by the American Automobile Association (AAA) and is presented by certified Fairfax County Auxiliary Police Officers. Upon completion of this course, drivers are eligible for the Virginia State mandated insurance premium reduction (check with individual insurance carriers for the amount)! The classes are held the second Saturday of each month at the Franconia District Station. The next MODIP class will be held on Saturday, April 10, 2004, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. A subsequent seminar is also scheduled for May 8th. Registration is required and can be done by contacting the MODIP reservations line at (703) 924-6588. The fee for this course is $10.00 per person for books and materials.

MISSING ADULT

Aspenpark Court, 9100Block: An 83-year-old man is missing from the Lorton area and police are asking for assistance finding him. On Wednesday, March 31st, between 6:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., Oliver Jerry Giles, left his home in the 9100 block of Aspenpark Court, and has not been seen since. Giles is black, five feet seven inches tall, 190 pounds, and has black hair, brown eyes and a mustache and beard. Giles was last seen wearing blue jeans, a blue and gray sweater, a long tan and blue plaid jacket, and a blue or black baseball cap. Giles may be experiencing the early stages of Alzheimer’s. Giles was found in the City of Alexandria by a citizen on Thursday, April 1. Medical personnel were summoned and Giles was subsequently taken to Alexandria Hospital with non-life threatening injures. Giles has been reunited with his family.

SUSPICIOUS DEATH

Fleet Drive, 6500 Block: The body of a Springfield area man was discovered after a vehicle fire was extinguished in the Franconia area. On Wednesday, March 31st, around 11:30 p.m., the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department was called to the 6500 block of Fleet Drive where they found a vehicle fully engulfed in flames. After putting the fire out, the body of Sean E. Burke, 35, of the 6600 block of Custer Street, was discovered in the front seat inside the vehicle. Fairfax County Police detectives and Fairfax County Fire Marshals are investigating. The Fairfax County Crash Reconstruction Unit is also assisting in the investigation. No foul play is suspected in Burke’s death.
