Mature Operator's Driver Improvement Program (MODIP)

The Franconia District Station of the Fairfax County Police Department will be offering Virginia residents 55 and older enrollment in the Mature Operator's Driver Improvement Program (MODIP).This eight-hour class covers safe driving information for mature drivers. The course is sanctioned by the American Automobile Association (AAA) and is presented by certified Fairfax County Auxiliary Police Officers. Upon completion of this course, drivers are eligible for the Virginia State mandated insurance premium reduction (check with individual insurance carriers for the amount). The classes are held the second Saturday of each month.

The next MODIP class is being held at the Franconia District Station located at 6121 Franconia Road, on Saturday, April 12, 2003, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. A subsequent seminar is scheduled for May 10, 2003. Registration is required and can be done by contacting the MODIP reservations line at (703) 924-6588. The fee for this course is $10 per person for books and materials.

MAJOR INCIDENTS

ROBBERY

General Washington Drive 5700:  A Bealton man, 41, was working in his office when a man entered, brandished a handgun and demanded money. The victim relinquished his cash then began struggling with the suspect. The suspect struck the victim in the head with the gun during the struggle. The victim was able to get away and call for help. The suspect fled in a light-colored camper, which later was found to have been stolen from another nearby business. </SPA! NThe victim was treated at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital for a head laceration. (Note that no date was provided by the Public Information Office for this incident).

Lewis Chapel Circle 7800:  On March 17th at 11:40 p.m., a Fairfax area man, 29, parked his truck and a man opened the passenger's side door and pointed a handgun at him. The armed man announced a robbery and took the victim's cash and cellular telephone. The suspect was described as black, in his 20's, five feet ten inches tall and weighed 160 pounds. He was wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt.

Ridge View Drive 5900: On March 18th at 11:55 p.m., an Alexandria area man, 39, got out of his car and was walking to his house when two men ran at him from some bushes at the side of his home. One man pointed a sawed-off shotgun at the victim and demanded the bags he was carrying. The suspect grabbed the bags from the victim and struck him in the head with the weapon. Both suspects then fled the area in a white Nissan Maxima. The victim refused rescue for a cut on his head. The armed suspect was described as black, in his late 20's, five feet nine inches tall and weig! hed 170 pounds. He was wearing a white shirt and jeans. There is no description of the second suspect.
