POLICE UNITY TOUR:
Eight police officers from Virginia were among the 148 officers nationwide killed in the line of duty last year. The Police Unity Tour was started in 1997, when an officer from New Jersey honored his fallen colleagues by riding his police-issued mountain bike from his home to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC. Today, the Police Unity Tour has grown to include approximately 150 officers from across Virginia (37 from Fairfax County) and its purpose is not only to honor the lives lost, but offer financial support to the families those officers left behind and raise support for and awareness of the Memorial.
This years Unity Tour has four participants from the Franconia District Station, who hope to raise $5,000 for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, but they cant do it without your help. The officers need local donations by the first week in April.
They also need the support and encouragement of everyone who values the work they do. The riders leave with a "Send-Off Ceremony" in Chesapeake, Virginia on May 9; ride 250 miles in two days; and arrive at the Memorial on May 12.
Donations can be dropped off at the Franconia District Station at any time. Checks can be made out to "Police Unity Tour."
For more information on the Police Unity Tour, please contact CPO Phil Edwards or CPO Sheri Cook at 03-922-8263. Also see www.policeunitytour.org for information about the national effort. Thanks.
Mark your calendars! The next CAC meeting will be held on Wednesday evening, March 17, 2004 in the Community Meeting room at the Franconia Governmental Center. Social period begins at 7pm, meeting begins at 7:30 pm. We hope to see you there.
