Animal Shelter Announces Rabies Clinics

The Fairfax County Animal Shelter will host six rabies clinics in 2006. The first clinic was held January 22, and the remaining clinics are scheduled for March 12, May 21, July 9, September 10 and November 19. The clinics are held at the Fairfax County Animal Shelter, located at 4500 West Ox Road in Fairfax, from noon till 2 p.m. The charge is $10. The clinics are offered for cats and dogs (not ferrets). Dogs need to be on leashes and cats in carriers. No rabies tags will be issued. Dog licenses will be sold separately ($5 for altered animals and $10 for unaltered animals.) Clinics are sponsored by Deepwood Veterinarian Hospital and the Fairfax County Police Department Animal Services Division.

CAC:

Our next regular CAC meeting will be held at the Franconia Government Center, 6121 Franconia Road, on Wednesday evening, February 15, 2006, in the Helen Wilson Community Room.  A Social Period begins at 7pm, and the General Meeting starts at 7:30pm.

MODIP:

The Fairfax County Police Department offers residents 55 years of age and older enrollment in the Mature Operator’s Driver Improvement Program (MODIP). This eight hour course, which provides safe driving information, is sanctioned by the American Automobile Association (AAA) and is presented by certified Fairfax County Auxiliary Police Officers.  Upon completion of this course, drivers are eligible for the Virginia State-mandated insurance premium reduction (check with individual insurance carriers for the amount). The classes are normally held the second Saturday of each month at the Franconia District Station. The next seminars are scheduled at the Franconia District Station, located at 6121 Franconia Road, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on February 11, and March 11, 2006.  Registration is required and can be done by contacting the MODIP reservations line at (703) 924-6588. The fee for this course is $10.00 per person for books and materials.

ROBBERY

Kingstowne Town Center, 5800 Block:  On Wednesday, January 25 around 2 a.m., a 22-year-old employee from the Mobil Gas Station located at 5800 Kingstowne Towne Center was approached inside the store by a man brandishing a handgun. The suspect demanded money. After the victim gave the money the suspect fled the area on foot. The victim was not injured.  The suspect was described as a 20-year-old white man who was approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighed about 170 to 180 pounds. He was wearing tan pants, a dark colored hooded sweatshirt and a mask.

ATTEMPTED ROBBERY

Franconia Road, 6100 Block:  Employees of the CVS Pharmacy drug store, located at 6150 Franconia Road were victims of an attempted robbery.  Around 10:45 a.m. on January 24 a man entered the store and walked to the pharmacy. The suspect spoke to the employee, a 28-year-old Woodbridge-area woman, and demanded the prescription drug OxyContin. The victim recognized the man as the same suspect from the January 18 pharmacy robbery (see next item, below).  She walked into the back and called for help.  The suspect fled the store in an unknown direction.  No one was injured. The suspect was described as white, in his 30s, 5 feet 9 inches tall to 5 feet 11 inches tall, wearing a beige baseball cap and wide frame oval glasses. 

ROBBERY

Franconia Road, 6100 Block: On Wednesday, January 18 at approximately 3:00 p.m., a man entered the CVS Pharmacy drug store, located at 6150 Franconia Road and went to the pharmacy. The suspect implied he had a gun and demanded the prescription drug, OxyContin. The suspect was given the OxyContin and fled on foot. No one was injured. The suspect was described as white, approximately 40-50 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches tall to 5 feet 11 inches tall, wearing a beige baseball cap, a gray sweatshirt and light colored blue jeans.

ROBBERY

Fleet Drive/Flatrock Road:  On Saturday, January 21 around 3 p.m., four Alexandria-area male juveniles were approached in the area of Fleet Drive and Flatrock Road by eight males. The suspects demanded money from the victims and assaulted three of them. After taking money from one of the victims, the suspects fled the area on foot. The victims were not injured. Officers located the males believed to be involved. Two of the suspects were taken into custody and released to their parents. One of the suspects was a 16-year-old black male and the second suspect was a 17-year-old black male. This investigation is still ongoing.

SHOOTING

Old Keene Mill Road, 7300 Block:  A 16-year-old boy was shot in the Springfield area. On Friday, January 20 at approximately 10:30 p.m., officers were called to the 7300 block of Old Keene Mill Road after shots were fired inside a home. Investigation revealed that the teenager was shot in the midsection while at a large party. The victim, a Springfield-area boy, suffered non life-threatening injuries and was medivaced to Inova Fairfax hospital for treatment. A suspect description is not available at this time. The investigation continues.
