FRAUD

Detectives in the Criminal Investigations Bureau are seeking information to identify the man who has defrauded several local banks of more than $20,000 since late September 2003. The man assumed the identity of a California resident and opened several accounts at local bank branches. He deposited counterfeit checks into the accounts and then made withdrawals before the victim banks learned the checks were counterfeit. He also was able to obtain an ATM card from one bank and has made numerous fraudulent "point-of-sale" purchases. Sun Trust Bank, United Bank and BB&T Bank branches throughout Fairfax County have been targeted. The man is described as white and in his 30’s or 40’s. If you have any information about these crimes, please call the Criminal Investigations Bureau at 703-246-7800.
